There are various categories of nonimmigrant visas for a person who wishes to work temporarily in the United States. They are based on the US immigration laws, namely the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
Under INA, if you want to work in the U.S. temporarily, you need a specific visa based on the purpose of your travel and type of work you will be doing.
The basic requirement before you come to the United States lawfully as a nonimmigrant to work temporarily in the United States is for your prospective employer to file a nonimmigrant petition on your behalf with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service’s (USCIS).
H-1B Persons in Specialty Occupation. This is the most popular type of temporary work visa in the US. It requires that you have theoretical and practical knowledge in your profession you have acquired after you have completed some higher education. The maximum number of H1B visas issued per year is 65,000. This category also includes fashion models and Government-to-Government research and development, or co-production projects administered by the Department of Defense. The limit on these last three categories id 100 per year.
